Bays Off To A Winning Start

Bays United started off their 2006/07 season with a 1-0 victory over a weaker Salt Spring side.  Benji “Showtime” Hooker slotted home the winner from a fine pass from Steve “Gator” Gateley.

With his speed, Gateley found space down the left flank and centered a fine pass to an opportunistic and open Hooker, to put the Bays boys ahead for good.

At the back the Bays were tight, with Craig “The Rock” Robertson earning game one’s Man of the Match Award.  New Bays keeper, Adam Guy, was tested, and recorded his and the Bay’s first shutout of the season.

The game saw the debut of many new Bays players and Coach Oak was able to rotate players in and out minimizing fatigue and maximizing happiness.

This Friday brings a real test for the Bays boys as they travel to hostile Cowichan to play a useful Cowichan United side.  In their first game, Cowichan lost to Gorge 0-3, so they will be charged and looking for their first victory of the year.

The Bays boys will need two good practices and a United effort on Friday to move into 1st place in the VISL. Go Bays Go!!

Cowichan 2-3 Bays, Gurney Strikes A Brace

Friday night saw the Bays boys secure top spot in the VISL, with a 2-3 victory over a gritty Cowichan squad.  Goals by Bays’ rookies Shaun “Walt” Gurney and  a game winner by Kellen “Fowler” McKellar secured 3 points for the lads in white and green.

Gurney hit twice in the first half to put the Bays boys ahead twice, capturing the game’s Man of the Match award.  His first came off a great corner from Steve”Gator”Gateley, which Gurney met with a beautiful diving header to send the Bays contingent into rapture.  His second was supplied by a great cross from the right flank, by stand out defender, Craig ”The Rock” Robertson, which Gurney slotted into the corner of the goal.

Despite Gurney’s two early goals, Cowichan was able to equalize twice thanks to goals by Kevin Smith and Matt Arnett.  However, Cowichan were unable to equalize again after a third Bays goal, which was slotted home by Mckellar. Robertson found space down the left wing and found Mckellar open around the penalty spot. Mckellar was able to slot home easily to apply the killer knock-out punch, Kaaapow, Ya Lose!!

Coach Fast was happy with the result and had this to say, “Anytime you can come to Duncan and return with 3 points you are happy.  But this is only one game and we have a tough week ahead of us in preparation for Gorge”. Coach Fast also added his pleasure with the work of the midfield,” Our midfielders were great tonight and controlled much of the game, their intensity was awesome. Anthony “The Animal” Porco was an animal out there today and he reminded me of a young Rocky Balboa in Rocky 3, against Mr.T, “Come on break my leg! Break my leg!””.

The Bays boys will need two good practices and a United effort against Gorge on Friday to lock down 1st place in the VISL. Go Bays Go!!
